SCO Kunming International Marathon receives IAAF Bronze Label
12.07.2019 16:23

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) granted a Bronze Label to the SCO Kunming International Marathon.

Considering that the Kunming Marathon is a relatively new event, receiving a Bronze Label at this stage is one of its landmark victories on the way towards the highest standards.

This IAAF decision denotes the marathon's great potential, popularity and high standards in the organisation of events as well as the Organising Committee's efficient way of working.

International marathons have firmly established themselves in the cultural and humanitarian niche of the SCO activity. Every year, the races become increasingly more distinctive and exciting and attract both professional athletes together with running enthusiasts from all over the world.

The number of marathon participants grows every year. In 2017, 14,300 runners represented 27 countries. In 2018, participation exceeded 20,000 people from 52 countries. Those taking part describe the Kunming Marathon as a true festival of friendship and mutual understanding not only between SCO peoples but nations from other continents as well. Kunming successfully completed its

important mission and provided all the necessary conditions so that every guest is comfortable. On 1 December 2019, the city of eternal spring will host numerous marathon runners once again.

The success of the SCO Kunming International Marathon is attributed to the well-coordinated work of the Organising Committee, support of relevant agencies in SCO member states, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese Athletics Association, administrations of the Yunnan province and the city of Kunming, as well as the Yunnan Shanghe Culture and Sports corporation, partner of the SCO Secretariat in organising the SCO marathon.

The International Association of Athletics Federations grants Bronze, Silver and Gold Labels to marathons, half-marathons, 20 km, 10 km, 12 km, 5 km and 10-mile races.

To qualify for a status, the race must meet a number of criteria:

-International elite field (runners with times faster than the IAAF guidelines) representing four countries for Bronze and five countries for Silver and Gold;

-The running course must be closed off to traffic;

-Minimum environmental damage;

-Electronic timing;

-The distances must be measured according to the standards of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS);

-Prizes should be distributed equally, regardless of gender or nationality;

-Specified doping tests must be carried out.
