Director of the Russian Language Center under the Beijing Foreign Studies University Li Yingnan declared that bilateral holding of the Years of National Languages by China and Russia is quite useful for strengthening of centuries-old friendship of the two nations and successful development of the Chinese-Russian relations.
As agreed, the year 2009 is the Year of the Russian Language in China, and the year 2010 is the Year of the Chinese Language in Russia. This is considered as the next important step after bilateral holding of the National years on the way of the comprehensive development of bilateral ties and strengthening of societal foundation of the Chinese-Russian friendship. On December 31, 2008 PRC President Hu Jintao and the RF President Dmitry Medvedev sent telegrams to each other, where they announced on the beginning of the Years of national languages.
Li Yingnan said that events within the framework of the Year of the Russian Language will apply not only the language teaching, but will also cover various spheres of the two countries’ humanitarian ties.
Their aim is a profound acquaintance of the Chinese with the Russian culture and the modern Russia. “Being the main force of the Year of the Russian Language holding, the Chinese higher education institutions with the Russian language departments, are actively making relevant preparations. I am sure that events will be diverse,” Li Yingnan noted.
According to her, during the Year of the Russian Language the Chinese higher education institutions plan to hold a China National contest of the Russian language. In capacity of a leading higher education institution in the field of the Russian language teaching the Beijing Foreign Studies University intends to organize a number of events, including the China national Internet-contest of the best composition in Russian, Festival of the Russian culture, Russian films demonstration and training seminar on writing Russian language textbooks for students.
Li Yingnan said that the program of the Year of the Russian Language also includes “the Chinese sing Russian songs” contest. Its final part is planned to be held at the Year of the Russian Language’s closing ceremony. Its winners will also perform in Russia during the Year of the Chinese Language holding.
Statistically, today about 90 Chinese higher education institutions have the Russian language departments, where over 12 thousand people study. The number of other departments’ students learning Russian is 20-30 thousand people.
